What You’ll Need
- Boiler manufacturer-approved heat exchanger cleaner (not domestic descaler)
- Soft-bristled brush or old toothbrush
- Low-pressure hose or watering can
- Bucket and towels
- Replacement heat exchanger gasket (always replace when disturbed)
- Magnetic filter (optional but recommended for prevention)
Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide
Step 1: Isolate and Cool
- Turn off the electrical supply and gas
- Allow the boiler to cool for at least 2 hours
- Close the isolation valves beneath the boiler
Step 2: Access the Heat Exchanger
- Remove the boiler casing
- Locate the heat exchanger — it’s the large metal block with pipes entering and leaving
- On combi boilers, there are usually two: primary (heating) and plate (hot water)
Step 3: Remove the Heat Exchanger
- Photograph all pipe connections
- Undo the retaining clips or nuts
- Withdraw the heat exchanger carefully — water will drain out
- Place a bucket underneath to catch residue
Step 4: Flush with Cleaner
- Mix the heat exchanger cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions
- Pour the solution through the heat exchanger ports
- Allow it to soak for the recommended time (usually 15–30 minutes)
- Flush thoroughly with clean water until it runs clear
Step 5: Brush Away Debris
- Use a soft brush to remove any remaining scale or sludge
- Do not use metal wire brushes — they damage the metal surface
- Rinse again until the water is clean
Step 6: Reassemble
- Fit a new gasket or O-ring on every disturbed joint
- Reconnect the pipes in the exact same positions
- Tighten clips and nuts firmly but do not overtighten
- Open isolation valves and check for leaks
- Replace the casing and restore power and gas
Step 7: Test and Commission
- Run the boiler on maximum heating for 30 minutes
- Check for leaks, noises, and proper temperature rise
- Add inhibitor to the system to prevent future buildup
When to Replace Instead of Clean
Cleaning is not always worth the effort. Replace the heat exchanger if:
- The boiler is over 10 years old
- The heat exchanger is cracked or corroded
- Cleaning does not restore performance

Prevention: Stop It Happening Again
