Noise 1: Kettling (Banging or Rumbling Like a Kettle)
What it sounds like: A deep rumbling or banging from inside the boiler, especially when the heating first comes on.
What causes it: Limescale or sludge buildup on the heat exchanger. The scale creates hot spots where water boils locally, producing steam bubbles that collapse violently — causing the banging sound.
Is it dangerous? Yes — kettling puts extreme stress on the heat exchanger and can cause it to crack or leak. A cracked heat exchanger usually means a new boiler.
How to fix it:
- Mild kettling: Power-flush the system and add inhibitor
- Severe kettling: Replace the heat exchanger if the boiler is worth saving
- Prevention: Fit a magnetic filter and use inhibitor in the system
Noise 2: Pump Hammering or Vibrating
What it sounds like: A rapid clicking, buzzing, or vibrating from the boiler casing, usually near the pump.
What causes it: The circulation pump is running dry, has an airlock, or the bearings are worn. A seized pump can also cause banging as the motor strains against the impeller.
How to fix it:
- Bleed the pump (look for a small bleed screw on the pump head)
- If the pump is hot and silent, it has seized — replace the circulation pump
- If the pump is noisy but running, the bearings are worn — replace the pump
Noise 3: Banging from Pipework (Water Hammer)
What it sounds like: A single loud bang or series of bangs from the pipes, especially when a valve closes or the heating switches off.
What causes it: Water moving at high speed is suddenly stopped by a closing valve. The shockwave travels through the pipework, causing the bang.
How to fix it:
- Fit an automatic air vent to release trapped air
- Check that pipe clips are secure — loose pipes amplify the noise
- Install a water hammer arrestor on the feed pipe
Noise 4: Gurgling from Radiators or Boiler
What it sounds like: A bubbling or glugging sound, like water draining from a sink.
What causes it: Air trapped in the system. Air prevents water from circulating properly, causing the boiler to overheat locally and make noise.
How to fix it:
- Bleed all radiators from the top floor down
- Check the automatic air vent on the boiler — if it’s blocked, replace it
- If air returns quickly, the expansion vessel may be failing
Noise 5: Clicking or Tapping at Ignition
What it sounds like: A rapid clicking when the boiler tries to ignite, followed by a small pop or bang.
What causes it: The ignition electrode is sparking but the gas is not igniting cleanly. Gas builds up briefly before igniting, causing a small explosion.
How to fix it: Replace the ignition electrode and clean the burner. If the electrode gap is wrong or the ceramic is cracked, the spark is weak and ignition is delayed.
